يحاول الباحث في كتابه هذا الوقوف على حقيقة مشكلة التخلف في العالم الثالث، وقد سعى إلى ذلك لا من خلال تناول المشكلة من الخارج والسطح، بل من خلال النفوذ إلى الداخل والعمق، وعثر بعد إزالته الحجب والحواجز الواقعة بينه وبين عمق وحقيقة هذه المشكلة بأن ما يشاع عن أزمة رؤوس أموال، وأزمة نقصان الخبرات الفنية، وأزمة نقل التكنولوجيا، وأزمة علاقة بين عالم الشمال والجنوب هذه كلها ليست أزمات في حياة الشعوب، ولكن الأزمة يتمثل في أن العالم المختلف يعيش أزمة إنسان، وهذا يعكس بدوره أثره على مشكلة العالم الإسلامي، وستكون طبيعة مشكلة المسلم الحضارية فرد فقد ذاته، وأمة ضيعت رسالتها، وفي سبيل بيان كل ذلك فقد دارت أفكار الباحث في هذه الدراسة حول قضية النهضة في المجتمع الإسلامي.
هذا الكتاب يهدف إلى دراسة مشكلة التخلف بالنفاذ إلى عمق وداخل هذه المشكلة التي تقض مضجع العالم الثالث.
كما يتناول هذه القضية في العالم الإسلامي لاستنتاج واقع مرير يقرّ بأن طبيعة هذه المشكلة حضارية تنمّ عن فرد فقد ذاته، وأمة ضيّعت رسالتها.
يطل على العالم من خلال متغيرات عدة تتمثل في ما حلّ بالاتحاد السوفياتي السابق وما نراه من مشكلات وحروب عرقية وعنصرية كما يحصل في الهند وجنوب أفريقيا وبين أرمينيا وأذربيجان، ومن تصفيات بشرية ومذهبية كما يحصل في البوسنة والهرسك، وما يحصل من تجاهل لحقوق الشعوب المغلوبة كما في جنوب لبنان وفي الأراضي العربية المحتلة في فلسطين.
