أندريه كلو، مؤلف هذا الكتاب، مؤرخ فرنسي مشهور أمضى سنين طويلة في البلدان الإسلامية في الشرق الأوسط. وقد نشر في عام 1983 كتابه عن سليمان القانوني. أما سبب اختياره، هذه المرة، الرشيد، موضوعاً لكتابه، فإنه يبينه في السطور التالية: "قد يسمح لي المؤرخون العرب أن أنقل الصورة الحقيقية عن هارون الرشيد، ليس فقط عن الترف والجواري والموسيقى وإنما محاولة معرفة المبادئ والخطوط العريضة التي خطها وأنتهجها الرشيد في مراحل سياسته. وإذا كان الغرب لا يعرف عن الرشيد سوى الهدايا التي أرسلها إلى شارلمان، وخاصة الفيل المشهور، أبو العباس، فإن الرشد قبل كل شيء مقاتلاً، شن الحرب ضد البيزنطيين، وكان عليه أن يجابه، ولعدة مرات، الحركات الدينية التي هزت إمبراطوريته المترامية ألأطراف. ولم يتردد الرشيد في أن ينزل العقاب على البرامكة، العائلة المتنفذة التي كادت أن تخلق دولة داخل دولة، ولم يكن الرشيد يطيق تحمل نفوذها وثروتها في أواخر أيامها. كما أن الرشيد المدافع عن المثقفين قد أطلق العنان للازدهار الثقافي في بغداد التي كانت آنذاك أكبر مدن العالم، وقد عرفت العاصمة العباسية تقدماً اقتصادياً لم يسبق له مثيل. وقد ذاع صيته في كل أرجاء المعمورة ليس من خلال المؤرخين والكتاب فقط وإنما من خلال الرحالة والتجار.
هذه هي الأسباب التي دفعت المؤلف لإعداد هذا الكتاب. أما الأسباب التي دفعت المترجم -كاتب هذه السطور- لاختيار هذا الكتاب للترجمة فهو أنني من خلال قراءتي له وجدت فيه، فعلاً، معلومات جديدة عن هذا القائد العربي خاصة في تعامله مع القضايا المصيرية الحساسة، فقد كان حازماً أبي النفس بالإضافة إلى الكرم والشجاعة، وليس الانغماس في الترف والمجون فقط كما يزعم بعض الكتاب. وقد وجدت فيه معلومات تفيد القارئ العربي وتجعله يفخر بتاريخه وبقادته خاصة في هذه الفترة العصيبة التي تمر بها الأمة العربية، وخاصة بلدي العراق الذي يعاني من الظلم والعدوان.
