لقد كان الرشيد ذا ثقافة واسعة، حصلها من طبيعةٍ له محبة للاستطلاع، راغبة في المعرفة، ميّالة إلى التفوق. وقد نمت ثقافة الرشيد هذه في إطار المناظرات والمحاورات التي كانت تدور في بلاطه، ومن مطالعات شخصية له تحدّت غير مرّة مخزون ثقافة الجلساء، فبرز هذا التحدي أسئلة وامتحانات خضع لها كل عالم وأديب، وكل مدّع للعلم والأدب اتصل بالبلاط.
وهو إلى ذلك أديب شاعر قال شعره في الحبّ والغزل حيث انحصر معظم شعر الرشيد في جواريه وصل أحياناً إلى الرثاء، وكان شعره هذا وإبداعه قيمان عنده بدافع حبّ الظهور بمظهر الأديب أو الشاعر ويرتبطان بظروف هذا الدافع، ويكونان بالتالي بعيدين عن المتابعة والاستمرار، نادرين، جاعلين أدبه موزعاً، منتثراً في ثنايا الأخبار ومناسبات المواقف. وقد جمعها المحقق وقسمها في هذا الكتاب ثلاثة أقسام، أثبت في الأول منها ترجمة للرشيد، وفي الثاني ديوانه، وفي الثالث فصولاً تتعلق بحياة الرشيد الأدبية، ملحقاً ذلك بثبت لأدب الرشيد غير المنظوم ضمنه المحقق ما استطاع جمعه من آداب الرشيد المنثور موزعاً بين خطب وتوصيات وأقوال مأثورة وتوقيعات وأدعية.
