في أوائل الخمسينات من هذا القرن (1954) كانت أسرة السيد خليل الكيالي تشهد ميلاد شاعرة ناشئة، هي الابنة شهلا، ويبدو أن الكلمات القليلة والخواطر المبعثرة التي كتبتها الصبية شهلا ذات الأربعة عشر ربيعاً-آنذاك-كانت تعد بالكثير. وما هي إلا أن انقضت فترة قصيرة حتى راحت شهلا تقلد بعض قصائد النكبة التي نجمت عن ترحيل شعب فلسطين، وخلعه من جذوره وبناء دولة عنصرية جديدة على الأرض هي دولة إسرائيل.
وفي أوائل الستينات راحت الشابة شهلا تكتب محاولات أخرى متفرقة. ويبدو أن الفترة الخصبة شعرياً في حياة شاعرتنا هي أوائل الثمانينات، ففي هذه الفترة ضاعفت السيدة شهلا من تركيزها على الشعر، و أصدرت ديواناً هو كلمات في الحرج، وسيلاحظ قارئ هذا الديوان أنه جاء نتيجة طبيعية لغز إسرائيل للبنان سنة 1982.
أما ديوانها الجديد "وانقطعت أوتار الصمت" فتدور قصائده-في مجملها-حول قضية واحدة كبيرة هي القضية الفلسطينية. والحق أن الشاعرة شهلا الكيالي تتعرض لهذه القضية-بحماس كبير، لا نجده عند مثيلاتها من بنات جيلها المثقفات، اللواتي دخلن المعاهد والجامعات، ونلن درجة معينة من الثقافة والعلم.
ولقد شهدت الشاعرة النكبة الفلسطينية الكبرى (1948) ونكسة حزيران (1967)، وتأثرت بهما تأثراً ملحوظاً، أما انقطاع الشاعرة لهذه القضية فعائد إلى كونها ابنه لها، إضافة إلى كونها ضحية من ضحايا الموجة البربرية الجديدة: الموجة الصهيونية الاستيطانية التوسعية العدوانية. وها هي تشرح ذلك فتقول: "أنا التي فقدن وطنها منذ كانت طفلة. سكنت الخيام، وتركت بيتها الجميل ذا الحديقة الغناء. كانت تحن لألعابها وتتخيلها في الأحلام.
أنا الطفلة التي كانت تشاهدها دموع أبيها، وهو يبكي متحسراً على أرضه، أنا الطفلة التي حدثتها جدتها وأمها وعمتها وخالتها كثيراً كثيراً عن جمال الوطن. أنا الطفلة التي كانت في ليالي الشتاء الباردة العاصفة تمسك بعمود الخيمة خوفاً من سقوطها على عائلتها كيف بالله وقد مررت بهذه الطفولة المعذبة-سأوجه شعري لشيء آخر غير وطني".
