درس الطب والفلسفة في دمشق، وفي باريس تخصص في الجراحة، ودرس الفلسفة المقارنة.
يقيم في باريس منذ أكثر من عشرين عامًا، حيث يعمل طبيبًا، وهو أيضًا عضو الجمعية الجراحية الفرنسية.

الرحالة هنا ليس سائحاً، وكتابه ليس دليلاً للسائحين، إنما "الرحالة قارئ! لكنه لا يقرأ الكلمات، وإنما العلامات". بهذا الوعي يكتب الرحالة والروائي خليل النعيمي كتاباً جديداً في السفر: ستة نصوص عن ست رحلات قام بها الكاتب حول العالم، غطت أربع قارات، ووقفت على جغرافيات الأرض والناس، وعلى الروح الإنساني بصفته كلا لا يتجزأ مهما اختلفت اللغات وتباينت التجارب والعراق، لأن "التعود على رؤية الأشياء والكائنات نفسها يصيبنا بالعمى".
نحن نسافر.. فنحن "لا ندرك، وإن كنا نعلم، أن الكون مليء بالشغف والأساطير الحية إلا عندما نسافر"، فالسفر، بهذا المعنى ومن خلال هذه الرؤية الشفافة والعميقة التي يتسلح بها الكاتب، بحث عن الحرية. إنها أيضاً محاولات متكررة لاستكشاف الذات من خلال استكشاف العالم، والتعبير عن الألم الشخصي من خلال لمس ألم الآخر البعيد والمجهول، والخلاص عن طريق البحث عن أمل جديد، فـ"للسفر وجوه، والوجه الذي يهمنا هو الذي يجعلنا نتشبث بمشاهد الكون وكأنها لم تكن إلا لنا".
بهذه الرؤية النافذة يكتب المسافر، وقد سافر مغامراً لئلا يعود بالوعي نفسه الذي بدأ به، فالرحالة بالنسبة غليه "لا يجوب العالم بحثاً عن الصورة، وإنما عن الجوهر"، ولأجل هذا السمو الروحي في التعبير عن الأرضي والبراعة في الكتابة، حاز كتابه هذا، بامتياز على جائزة ابن بطوطة للرحلة المعاصرة لسنة 2006، ورأت فيه لجنة التحكيم إضافة حقيقية إلى أدب الرحلة المعاصرة، ولعله يكون من تلك الكتب التي ستبقى طويلاً في أيدي القراء.
