يهدف هذا العمل إلى تبين مصادر القصيدة العربية الحديثة،ـ وضبط أدواتها التي تتحول المصادر بها إلى شعر.
والقصيدة الحديثة هي الموزونة المقفاة التي سبقت القصيدة الحرة، وأخذت على عاتقها مهمة الخروج بالقصيدة العربية من المأزق الذي تردت فيه في عصورها المظلمة، والحال الذي آلت إليه بارتدادها نحو الوراء إلى العصور الذهبية للقصيدة تبعثها من جديد، تقلدها حيناً وتخترقها آخر. ومن أصحابها: محمود سامي البارودي، وحافظ إبراهيم، وأحمد شوقي، وإسماعيل صبري، وإبراهيم الدباغ، وإسكندر الخوري البيتجالي، وعلي الأحمد، وسعيد العيسى، ومحمود سليم الحوت، ومحمد رضا الشيباني، وأحمد الصافي النجفي. وغيرهم من شعراء العرب الذين تكتل بعضهم في ظل جمعيات أدبية. وبقي بعضهم الآخر خارجها لكنه يتمذهب بمذهبها.
وقد أشار البحث إلى اشتراك القصيدة الحديثة السابقة منها للحرة أو المحايثة لها في مصادر الخطاب وآلياته مع الإشارة إلى أن الإختلاف موجود ولكن لا في جذر المصدر وإنما في وظائفه وغاياته وأهدافه، من بلد إلى آخر ومن مرحلة إلى أخرى ومن ثقافة إلى أخرى ومن ظرف تاريخي أو سياسي أو إجتماعي إلى آخر.
وبناء على ما سبق وذكر، تتبع المؤلف مصادر الخطاب الشعري الحديث الكبرى، وضبط أدواته، وتبين القوانين التي تتحكم به وذلك من خلال ممارسة طرق البحث المعروفة كلها من تصنيف ووصف وإحصاء وجدولة على مدونة شعرية واحدة من مدونات الشعر العربي الحديث، هي للشاعر حسن البحيري حيث جاء الحديث عنها في بابين اثنين: يخص الأول مصادر الخطاب كلها. ويخص الثاني آليات الخطاب مثل الإيقاع والصورة الشعرية على وجه التحديد.
