هذا الكتاب يبحث في تاريخ تطور قراءات القرآن. فقد روي أن غير واحد من الصحابة جمع القرآن في مصحف خاص به ومنهم: عمر بن الخطاب, وعلي بن أبي طالب, وأبي بن كعب, وسالم مولى حذيفة, وعبد الله بن مسعود, وأبو موسى الأشعري, وعبد الله بن الزبير, وأبو زيد, ومعاذ بن جبل, وعبد الله بن عمر, وعائشة وحفصة وأم سلمة زوجات النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وغيرهم. أجمع علماء القرآن أن المراد بالجمع في هذا الحديث هو الحفظ واجتماع المسلمين على قرآن واحد. غير أن عدداً من العلماء قالوا بأن عثمان أحرق ما جمعه أبي بن كعب, ورفض عبد الله بن مسعود أن يقدم ما جمع من القرآن الى عامل عثمان بالعراق. وقد اختلفت هذه المصاحف بعضها عن بعض, حيث اشتملت كل نسخة على ما جمعه صاحبها, وما جمعه أحدهم لم يتفق حرفياً مع ما جمعه الآخرون. من هنا يعد هذا الكتاب أساساً لرؤية جديدة في تطور قراءات القرآن استناداً الى اختلاف مصاحف الصحابة.
