يتناول المصنف في هذا الكتاب كل ما يهم المسلم حول المصاحف. جاء ذلك ضمن خمسة أجزاء. وكل جزء ضمن أبواب. في الجزء الأول تحدث المصنف في أبوابه عن من كتب الوحي لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وعن الأمر بكتابة المصاحف وخطوط المصاحف، وجمع القرآن... وفي الجزء الثاني كانت هناك أبواب في أخبار آيات متفرقة، وفي المصاحف العثمانية، اختلاف ألحان العرب في المصاحف وباب اختلاف مصاحف الأمصار التي نسخت من الإمام، وباب ما كتب الحجاج بن يوسف في المصحف، وباب اختلاف مصاحف الصحابة و... وفي الجزء الثالث عدد المصنف المصاحف، وفي الجزء الرابع تحدث المصنف حول الحكم الشرعي في كتابة المصاحف وأخذ الأجرة على ذلك، وعن كيفية كتابتها ونقطها وعن أشياء أخرى في هذا المجال. وفي الجزء الخامس كان هناك باب الاحتساب في كتاب المصاحف وحديث حول توريث المصحف وارتهانه وتعليقه والسفر به وعن غيرها من الأمور الشرعية التي تتعلق بالمصحف وقداسته.
