إنه لضرب من العبث أن يسافر المرء، أن يتكبد الرحلة لكي يؤكد غربته أو أوروبيته، رغم أن كثيراً من الرحلات والهجرات تؤدي إلى ذلك. يملك ميشائيل هذا الاستعداد لنسيان هويته(لا وجوده ولا ثقافته)، إنه استعداد ألماني بدون أن يكون بالطبع ممنوحاً لكل الألمان..."الحيوان الباكي" نموذج فريد على مغامرة قوامها أيضاً نسيان هوية الآخر(لا وجوده ولا ثقافته). الفرد الذي هو ميشائيل مر في هذا الكيان غير المحدد الذي هو بيروت أو بعلبك أو طرابلس أو لبنان ولم يحصره في عينه ولا في إحساسه، لقد مر في حياة آخرين، كان ثمة دائماً نقاط تماس ونقاط تقاطع هي تقريباً خطة "الحيوان الباكي" ومساره. "الحيوان الباكي" ككتب الرحلات التنويرية القديمة يتعلم أكثر مما يعلم. إنه أحياناً رسائل من بلاد أخرى، ذلك يعني أنها ليست البلاد نفسها، ليست أي بلاد، وربما ليست بلاداً معروفة بعد. ثمة دائماً إشارة إلى مكان ليس في الشرق والغرب، مكان مفقود يُتلمح في غيب الرحلة، يَمثُل ولا يحضُر... (...)
عندما قلت أن الصداقة هي ما فعلناه أنا وميشائيل، بدا هذا الكلام عاطفياً في إلمانيا وبسيطاً في لبنان، لذا احتفظنا بالكلمة التي تعبنا حتى وصلنا إليها كسرٍ بيننا. كان المشروع الذي جمعنا مندرجاً في ما يسمى حوار الثقافات، الصداقة بالطبع لم تكن على جدول المشروع، الأرجح أن هناك من يعتبرها تشويشاً على الحوار أو بديلاً غير ناضج له... حين قرأت كتاب ميشائيل شعرت أن كرم ميشائيل هو هذه المرة في جمال كتابته وقوتها، لقد أهدى هذا البلد الذي أحبه ذاكرة أوسع منه، صورة مجسمة وأفقاً، كان يحتاج هذا البلد إلى القلم البعيد ليجد قليلاً من الفخر الذي افتقده. ميشائيل بالحب الذي قلّما يجود به الأبناء يمنحه تلك الابتسامة الأيقونية ويقول له إن هذا بالضبط ما يستحقه.
