اقترح الفيلسوف الأمريكي ريشارد روتي في دراسة حديثة، أن نسمّ مساهمة الأدب في فهم عالمنا بشكل مختلف، فهو يرفض مصطلحات مثل "حقيقة" أو "معرفة" لوصف هذا الإسهام، ويؤكد أن الأدب يتدارك جهلنا أقل مما يشفينا من "تبجحنا"، المفهوم بوصفه وهم الإكتفاء الذاتي.
فقراءة الروايات، تبعاً له، تقترب من الأعمال العلمية، أو الفلسفية، أو السياسية أقل من إقترابها من نموذج آخر من نماذج التجربة: تجربة اللقاء مع أفراد آخرين، فمعرفة شخصيات جديدة هو مثل اللقاء بأشخاص جدد، مع فارق هو أننا نستطيع أن نكتشفهم من الداخل بشكل كلي، وأن نكتشف كل فعل من وجهة نظر مؤلفه.
وكلما قبل شبه هذه الشخصيات بنا، ازدادت توسعتها لأفقنا، وهذا يعني أنها تغني إذن علمنا.
وإن هذه التوسعة الداخلية (التي تشبه إلى حد ما التوسعة التي يحملها الرسم التصويري لنا) لا تتوضح في قضايا مجردة.
ولهذا، فإننا نبذل كثيراً من الجهد في وصفها، ذلك لأنها تمثل بالأحرى المدخل إلى وعينا بالطرق الجديدة للكينونة، إلى جانب تلك الطرق التي نملكها من قبل.
ولا يغير مثل هذا التعليم مضمون عقولنا، ولكنه يغير حامل المضمون نفسه: آلة الملاحظة وليس الأشياء الملحوظة، وما تعطيه الرواية لنا ليس معرفة جديدة، ولكن قدرة جديدة على التواصل مع كائنات مختلفة عنا.
وبهذا المعنى فهي تشارك في الأخلاق أكثر من مشاركتها في العلم، والأفق الأقصى لهذه الحقيقة ليس الحقيقة، ولكنه الحب، أي الشكل الأعلى للعلاقة الإنسانية.
