هذا الكتاب هو شهادة حيّة على ما تمثّله القرية في حياة الإنسان اللبناني، وهو دعوة ملحة من مؤلفة الدكتور ربيعة أبي فاضل - إلى وعي مسألة اهمية القرية وواجبات المحافظة عليها وعلى تراثها يقول المؤلف "حاولت في ما كتبت أن أمثل هذه الروح وأن أنقل حياة الريف أقاصيص إلى أبناء جيلي وإلى من يأتون بعدنا لعلهم يظلون مرتبطين بجذورهم، مخلصين لوطنهم... فميزة اللبناني، ولا سيما الريفيّ، تلقه بأرضه وبحياة الفطرة، ولئن ألحت عليه ضرورات الحياة والعصر بمماشاة الحضارة والتطور فإنه يجب ألا يتخلى عن الجوهر في قضية وجوده، فالجواهر تبقى والمظاهر تتغيّر".
والقارئ لهذه القصص، يشعر رغم كلاسيكية موضوعاتها والأساليب السردية التقليدية في الروي، إلاّ أن ما يميزها هو ربط موضوع كل شخصية، التي هي من المفترض عماد القصة؛ بالبيئة التي عاشت فيها هذه الشخصية، فيحضر الديك وابن آوى، والشمس والقمر والنهر والبيدر وغيرها بالتلازم مع كل حكاية، فتشارك الشخصيات مع البيئة، بل مع الزمان والمكان، وأما اللغة فهي سهلة ومتنوعة وتتدفق على رسلها، صادقة مباشرة، فيها من الصدق الغني والواقعية ما يجعل منها لغة أدبية بإمتياز.
من عناوين القصص تذكر: "في النهر"، "على البيدر"، "في التراب"، "مع النملة والغراب"، "الواوي والقنفذ"، "الغراب والحسون"، "ليلى والعصفور"، "معول أبو رثيف"، "أبو علي".... وقصص أخرى.
