موضوع هذا الكتاب هو شيخ الإشراق شهاب الدين السهروردي، حياته، وآثاره، وخصائصه الفكرية، حيث سعى مستفيداً مما سبقوه، إلى تأسيس مدرسة فلسفية ذات نزعة إشراقية جديدة في محيطها الإسلامي، لها منطقها الخاص بها، ومسائل يتناول فيها الأصالة ما بين الماهية والوجود، والأنوار الإلهية ومراتبها، والنفس، والبرازخ، والأجسام، والمعرفة، والفيض الإلهي، والمعاد وغيرها.
وفي هذا الإطار يغطي المؤلف مضامين كتب السهروردي التعليمية والعقائدية ويقدم نبذة عن كل كتاب مثل "حكمة الإشراق" ، و "التلويحات اللوحية والعرشية" و "المقامات" و "المشارع والمطارحات" ومثلها قصص صوفية رمزية كُتبت بالفارسية، وتروي تجارب روحية معينة بلغة رمزية ومنها "الغربة الغريبة" و "حفيف أجنحة جبرائيل" و"لغة النمل" ، و"صفير العنقاء" ، بالإضافة إلى شروح وترجمات على كتب فلسفية كـ "رسالة الطير" وشرح "الإشارات والتنبيهات" ، واقتباس رسالة إبن سينا في العشق. كما تم شرح نصوص دينية سماوية كتفسير بضع آيات من القرآن الكريم، والأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، وإضافة أوراد وأدعية باللغة العربية: كالسراج الوهاج والتسبيحات والنفوس والعناصر والبارقات الإلهية ... واختتم بأشعار في الشعر العرفاني ...
