يعد هذا الكتاب من أهم الموسوعات الجامعة للحديث النبوي الشريف، كما يعتبر مرجعاً أساسياً لكل مشتغل في الحديث وهو كتاب جمع عدداً كبيراً من الاحاديث النبوية المرتبة حسب الاحرف الهجائية تبعاً للمسانيد والسنن.
والكتب العشرة التي تشمل هذا الكتاب ما جاء فيها من أحاديث الصحيح والحسن، والضعيف، والموضوع أيضاً، وتشتمل على أحاديث كثيرة في الأحكام، وفي التفسير، وفي التواريخ، والرقائق، والفضائل، وغير ذلك من فنون العلم، كما قد نبه على ذلك الإمام البخاري في كتابه الجامع، وفتح أبواب الهدى، وأرشد غلى مسالك النجاة، وترجم كتباً وأبواباً دلت على فقه نفس عظيم، وعلى همة سامية شاهقة، إلى نيل المعاني، وفي سائر العلوم الشرعية، وعلى إطلاع عظيم من السنة النبوية، والأحاديث المصطفوية، فرحمه الله من إمام، كما جعل له لسان صدق في هذه الأمة والأنام، ولكن قل ما يدخل في مصنفه من هذه الأحاديث لما شرطه في صحيحه من الشرط الذي ضاق، وتوسع مسلم بن الحجاج بعده في الشرط، وبالغ في المناظرة والحجاج، ومع هذا بقي عليه أحاديث أخر، لم يطلع عليها، وعي على شرطه، كما ستراها في هذا الكتاب.
وزقد وضع بتحقيق كل حديث مما يتعلق بالأحكام، والتفسير، والتاريخ، في كتبها الثلاثة، وما كان فيه وهن شديد بينه، وموضع تحرير ذلك، وتقديره، والتفسير عنه في كتابي الأحكام الكبرى، وسمى كتابه هذا "جامع المسانيد، والسنن الهادي لأقوم سنن" وهو المسند الكبير، وشرطي فيه أنه ترجم كل صحابي له رواية عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، مرتب على حروب المعجم، وأورد له جميع ما وقع له في الكتب، وما تيسر له من غيرها.
