يضم هذا الكتاب ما جمعه الإمام ابن كثير من أحاديث واردة من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم من كتب الإسلام المعتمدة في الأحاديث، ومن ذلك الكتب السنة، وهي؛ الصحيحان: البخاري، ومسلم، والسنن الأربع لأبي داود والترمذي، والنسائي وابن ماجة، ومن ذلك مسند الإمام أحمد، ومسند أبي بكر البذار، ومسند الحافظ أبي معطى الحوصلي، والمعجم الكبير للطبراني، فهذه عشرة كاملة، يذكر الإمام ابن كثير في كتابه هذا "جامع المسانيد والسنن" مجموع ما في هذه العشرة، وربما زاد عليها من غيرها، وكلُُُ ما يخرج من الأحاديث، مما يحتاج إليه في الدين، وهذه الكتب العشرة تشتمل على أو ربما مائة حديث بالمكررة، وفيها الصحيح، والحسن، والضعيف،والموضوع أيضاً، وتشتمل على أحاديث كثيرة في الأحكام، وفي التفسير، وفي التواريخ، والدقائق، والفضائل، وغير ذلك من فنون العلم. وقد عدد الإمام ابن كثير في كتابه إلى إيراد تلك الأحاديث واضعاً كل حديث مما يتعلق بالأحكام، والتفسير، والتاريخ في كتبها الثلاثة، وما كان فيه من وهن شديد بينه، وموضع ذلك، وتقديره، والتفسير عنه في كتابه "الأحكام الكبرى"، وأما منهجية الإمام في ذلك فهو الترجمة لكل صحابي له رواية عن رسول الله صلى الله على حروف المعجم، مورداً له جميع ما وقع له في الكتب، وما تيسَر له من غيرها.
في هذا كله يتبين مدى أهمية هذا المؤلّّف، وبكونه واحداً من المراجع الهامة في المسانيد والسنن. ولأهميته تمّ الاعتناء به حيث قام المحقق بتوثيق أصوله ويخرج أحاديثه وبالتعليق عليها.
يعد هذا الكتاب من أهم الموسوعات الجامعة للحديث النبوي الشريف، كما يعتبر مرجعاً أساسياً لكل مشتغل في الحديث وهو كتاب جمع عدداً كبيراً من الاحاديث النبوية المرتبة حسب الاحرف الهجائية تبعاً للمسانيد والسنن.
