شغل القاص الرائد والأديب الكبير عبد الملك نوري مرحلة مهمة في تاريخ الأدب في العراق، وعُدَّ من المؤسسين الأوائل لفنية القصة القصيرة العراقية الحديثة وأحد روادها البارزين، أضف إلى ذلك أنه شغل عدة مواقع سياسية ودبلوماسية، وللأديب الكبير موضع هذا الكتاب نشاطات أخرى في كتابة الرواية والمسرحية والشعر المنثور والترجمة والمقالة الأدبية والسياسية.
ولقد جمع المؤلف في كتابه هذا الشعر المنثور والمقالات الأدبية والسياسية التي وجدتها مبعثرة في صحف ومجلات عراقية وعربية، كان الأديب الكبير قد باشر بنشرها منذ سنة 1940 وحتى سنة 1972 وهو تاريخ إنقطاعه عن الكتابة والنشر.
وقد صنف المؤلف مقالاته إلى صنفين أدبية وأخرى سياسية وذلك لكي يتعرف القارئ أو الباحث على أساليبه الكتابية وطرق معالجته للموضوع أو الفكرة، فيسهل له الإطلاع على جوانب مهمة في حياة هذا الأديب وفنه المقالي والشعري، وأضاف أيضاً مختارات من ترجماته في القصة والمقالة والقصيدة.
