يعتبر الإمام ابن تيمية من العلماء الأفذاذ والنوابغ الذين استطاعوا أن يتحرروا من تأثير عصرهم تحرراً واعياً، ويدعو إلى العودة إلى نبع الإسلام الصافي، وخط سيره الأصيل، الذي حفظه ونقله ووعاه الجيل الأول من الصحابة.
وقد نال ابن تيمية كثيراً من الظلم في مناقشات كثيرة في حياته وبعد مماته، وأكثر ذلك بسبب نقاشه الكثير للفرق والمذاهب المخالفة لأهل السنّة والجماعة، وبسبب موقفه من بعض آراء الصوفية الغلاة الذين خرجوا في أقوالهم عن ظاهر الشرع، وموقفه كذلك من البدع المستحدثة، والتصدي لهم من خلال الرد على الفلاسفة، والرافضة وأكاذيبهم والباطنية وخبثهم ونفاقهم، والمتكلمين وتأويلاتهم الباطلة، والمقلدين وعبادتهم لشيوخهم وتعصبهم.
من هنا، يأتي هذا الكتاب الذي يحاول المؤلف من خلاله إبراز البعض من هذه المناقشات والآراء التي حكم عليها الكثير أحكاماً سيئة، وذمها وانتقصها من دون قراءتها، أو الإطلاع على فحواها، مكتفياً بما قاله خصومه - الواردة من خلال كتاب قتال أهل النبي، وهو مجموعة فتاويه، معتمداً في ذلك على النسخة التي حققها واعتنى بها الشيخ عبد الرحمن بن محمد بن قاسم العاصمي النجدي الحنبلي مع إضافة بعض التعليقات من كتابه "صيانة مجموع الفتاوى من السقط والتصحيف"، للشيخ ناصر بن محمد بن الفهد.
وقد سار الكتاب من خيث الإعتناء به على النهج التالي: 1-وضع نبذة وجيزة عن حياة ابن تيمية، 2-ضبط المتن، 3-تخريج الآيات القرآنية الواردة ضمن المتن، 4-وضع حاشية في أسفل صفحات الكتاب تضمنت ما يلي: تخريج الأحاديث والآثار الواردة في ثنايا الكتاب، التعليق على بعض المسائل الهامة، ترجمة للأعلام الواردة في ثنايا الكتاب، بيان آراء الفرق والمذاهب الكلامية بالإحالة إلى مصادرها، بيان الغريب من الألفاظ، ومعاني المصطلحات التي هي بحاجة إلى بيان، بيان موضع الأماكن والبلدان الواردة في ثنايا الكتاب إضافة مجموعة الرسائل التي أرسلها شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية وهو في السجن.
