مع ازدهار التجربة الحديثة للقصة القصيرة في المملكة العربية السعودية، يبرز الكاتب محمد بن ربيع الغامدي من بين عديد من الكتّاب، الذين يمثلون النقلة الحقيقية في فن القصة القصيرة وذلك من خلال تمرده على قواعد القصة التقليدية، واقترابه من لغة القصة الجديدة في نموذجها وضبابيتها، وتكثيف الرؤية فيها والإيماءات، والتطرق إلى المعاني الخفية، مع الحفاظ على جوهر الفن القصصي؛ وهو السرد الذي يؤول إلى أحداث ومواقف مأزومة، يعيشها مجتمع بعينه، سواء أكان هذا المجتمع مدنياً أم قروياً، ومن يستعرض "البرطأونات" المجموعة القصصية الجديدة للكاتب، يدرك على الفور حرص الغامدي، على استخدام لغة إشارية، تنبثق من خلال الوصف الحركي، وتؤازر اللغة الطبيعية. وهذه اللغة تبدو واضحة من خلال بعض المشاهد:
"كان حشدهم يغلي وسحائب الاشمئزاز كأنها الطير على رؤوسهم! وهو في خفة سلطعون يتسلق سلماً حديدياً نصب على جدار في ساحة داخل الحي.
سألت أقربهم: أهذا عمدة الحي؟ أجاب متبرماً دون أن يلتفت: لا، ليس بعمدة الحي ولا إمام المسجد ولا المؤذن!
ومن هذه القراءة يمكن القول أن الكاتب هنا نجح في جذب اهتمام القارئ إلى مشهده الروائي، وجعله في حالة ترقب وتوقع لِما سيحدث، عبر كلماته الموحية، ورسمه لصورة معبرة من دون التصريح بمغزى الفكرة التي ترمي إليها القصة تاركاً للقارئ قراءتها بالشكل الذي يريد. وهكذا يجذبنا محمد بن ربيع الغامدي ويقودنا طوعاً إلى حكاياته، فيدخلنا في منطقة الأدب الحقيقي، الذي تتحقق فيه روائية الرواية بامتياز.
تضم المجموعة ستة عشر قصة قصيرة وقصيرة جداً جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "شحّاذ"، "جنون"، "واسطة"، "سفينة"، "انكسار"، "فريسة"، "صيام"، "خيبة"، "انتظار"، "صوص"، "حمار"، "سلطعون"، "مطاردة"، "البرطأونات"، "قصف"، و"حصباء".
