هذا الكتاب في أصله بحث جامعي نال به مؤلفه الدكتور عاطف جودة نصر درجة الدكتوراه بمرتبة الشرف الأولى من قسم اللغة العربية وآدابها - كلية الآداب - جامعة عين شمس، وهو يتناول الرموز الشعرية في الأدب الصوفي مثل: الرمز الأسطوري، ورمزية اللغة، ورمز المرأة، ورمز الطبيعة، ورمز الخمر، ورموز الأعداد والحروف، والرموز المسيحية.
إن رمزية الشعر الصوفي في رأي المؤلف ذات طابع عرفاني، وهي من هذه الوجهة رمزية عرفانية لا يتأتى معها عزل التعبير الشعري عن مقومات التجربة الصوفية، لأنهما في نهاية الأمر يحيلان على تضايف بين البناء الشعري في رمزيته الوقائية، وبين التصوف بإعتباره علاقة دينامية حية بين الإلهي والإنساني.
