يطرح الشيخ الأصفهاني في هذا الكتاب قضية الإنسان ووضع الضوابط اللازمة التي تؤهله لما خلق له من الخلافة المتضمنة للعبادة، ولحمل الأمانة، وللأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر.
وهو يتناول الإنسان وأحواله مبينا الفروق الفردية و أثر البيئة في تكوين الفرد واستعداداته واهتماماته، ويدرس الإنسان بين العزلة والاختلاط وحاجته إلى الاجتماع مع غيره.
كل ذلك يعالجه الكتاب في ترتيب منطقي سليم إلى حد كبير، فهو بحق مؤسس (علم الإنسان) الذي ظهر في أواخر القرن العشرين، وظن أمن علوم الغرب علما أن الشيخ الأصفهاني طرح مشكلة الإنسان في كتابين أحدهما يكمل الآخر وهما (تفصيل النشأتين وتحصيل السعادتين و(الذريعة إلى مكارم الشريعة)، فهو يضع الإنسان في مكانه اللائق به، ويدرسه دراسة مفصلة ظاهره وباطنه وطاقاته، قلما نجد كتاباُُُُُ كتب في هذا الموضوع، ودرس الإنسان هذه الدراسة المعممة من مبدئه إلى منتهاه على ضوء الكتاب والسنة، إذ حشد للموضوع آيات من القرآن الكريم، وأحاديث نبوية كثيرة تؤيد وجهة نظره.
