إنه كتاب عن الصحافة السورية ورجالها… تاريخها وتاريخهم، وعن كل ما يتصل بهذه المهنة الثقافية-السياسية-الاجتماعية-الفنية. فهي المدرسة والجامعة، وإحدى صروح البلاد، وملامحها الدالة على نهضتها وقابليتها للتطور والتقدم.
هذا الكتاب محاولة متواضعة إذن لتقديم دراسة مكثفة عن الصحافة السورية خلال ما يزيد عن مائة عام، تستوفي أواخر العهد العثماني في نهايات القرن التاسع عشر وبدايات القرن العشرين، كما تستوفي مراحل العهود السياسية اللاحقة بدءاً من العهد العربي الفيصلي وحتى عهد البعث العربي الاشتراكي المعاصر، مروراً بعهود الانتداب الفرنسي فالاستقلال، فالانقلابات العسكرية، فمرحلة ما قبل الانفصال مع: "ثورة البعث وتجربته القومية والوطنية".
ويبدأ الكتاب بدراسة علمية تستوفي موضوع الإعلام في المطلق، انطلاقاً من أن الصحافة جزء أساس من صروح الإعلام وإحدى وسائله العامة. ويتطرق الكتاب إلى بحث هام وهو "الطباعة". وسيجد القارئ أن الطباعة لم تأخذ دورها ومكانتها وفعاليتها بسهوله، بالرغم من أنها المنطلق المحرك لمسيرة الصحافة وتنامي وظيفتها واتساع ميادينها...
كما يتطرق الكتاب إلى الإعلام وشموليته منطلقاً من أن الإعلام أصبح بحراً واسعاً لا يقتصر على الصحافة وحدها كوسيلة إعلامية كتابية وحيدة، مما يتطلب أن تشمل أبحاثه وسائل الإعلام الأخرى المسموعة والمرئية، أي الإذاعة والتلفزيون. ومن هذا المنطلق توقف الباحث أمام محطة الإذاعة والتلفزيون في سورية وقفة تاريخية ومعاصرة فبحث في تاريخهما ونشاطهما ودور رجالها أيضاً إتماماً لمواضيع الكتاب وعنوانه الفرعي (إعلام وإعلام) فهو لم يقتصر على موضوع الصحافة السورية ورجالها فقط، بل شمل جميع وسائل الإعلام.
