للشيعة الإمامية أربعة كتب ضخام في الحديث تعد مرجعاً للمجتهدين لاستنباط الأحكام وغير المدونة، وهذا الكتاب لمؤلفه محمد بن الحسن الطوسي الملقب بشيخ الطائفة، هو أعظم كتب الحديث في الفقه منزلة، وأكثرها منفعة. وقد أجمع الفقهاء على مكانته وبحسب ما يبدو من فاتحة الكتاب فإن الغاية الأولى من تأليفه لم تكن جمع الأدلة الفقهية أو الأحاديث، بل الدفاع عن العقيدة والجواب عن الشبهة التي طرأت على أحاديث أهل البيت من جهة اختلافها.
وقد جعله المؤلف شرحاً للمقدمة في الفقه تأليف أستاذه الشيخ المفيد، ثم يترجم كل باب حسبما يترجمه صاحب المقدمة. والمؤلف يسعى للتوفيق بين المتنافيات من الأحاديث. ويجتهد في أن يرى حديثاً يكون شاهداً على الجمع والتأويل إما بصريحه أو بفحواه.
