مؤلف هذا التفسير هو "أبي عبد الرحمن بن الأزدي السلمي"، كان شيخ الصوفية وعالمهم بخرسان، له اليد الطولى في التصوف والعلم الغزير، والسير على سنن السلف، أخذ الطريق عن أبيه فكان موفقاً في جميع علوم الحقائق ومعرفة طريق التصوف. وللمتصوفة أنواع في التفسير فمنهم من وجه همته إلى التفسير الظاهر ولم يتعرض للتفسير الإشاري. ومنهم من جعل غالب همه التفسير الظاهر وتعرض الإشاري ولم يحم حول المعاني الظاهرة كما فعل أبو عبد الرحمن السلمي وهو الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا.
ويقع هذا التفسير في مجلدين، يستوعبان جميع سور القرآن الكريم، ولكن المؤلف فيهما لم يتعرض لكل الآيات بل يتكلم عن بعضها ويُفضي عن بعضها الآخر وهو لا يتعرض فيه لظاهر القرآن وإنما جرى في جميع ما كتبه على نمط واحد هو التفسير الإشاري.
ثم إن أبا عبد الرحمن السلمي لم يكن له مجهود في هذا التفسير أكثر من أنه جمع مقالات أهل الحقيقة بعضها إلى بعض، ورتبها على حسب السور والآيات وأخرجها للناس في كتابه هذا الذي أطلق عليه اسم "حقائق التفسير" وأهم من نقل عنه في حقائقه جعفر بن محمد الصادق وابن عطاء السكندري وغيرهم.
وقد جاءت هذه المخطوطة مذيلة بتحقيق لطيف يكون كدليل لفهم معانيه وبلوغ مراميه ونظراً لذلك عمل المحقق على نسخ المخطوطة وضبط وتصويب الأخطاء التي جاءت بها، تخريج آيات الشواهد وأحاديثها المرفوعة، ترجمة لبعض أعلام الصوفية التي وردت بالمخطوطة، ترجمة لبعض الأماكن والبلدان والفرق، التعقيب على بعض النصوص الواردة في المخطوطة والتي تخالف نصوص الشريعة مع تأويلها إلى الحسن من القول.
