الوصف ركيزة أساسيّة في العمل القصصي؛ لها الفاعلية الكبيرة في تشكيل ألأحداث، والكشف عن أبعاد الشخصيات، ورسم البيئة المكانية والزمانية، ناهيك عن كونها وسيلة فنية، تعكس جميع الدلالات الفكرية والنفسية والإجتماعية التي تسبح في عوالم النص القصصي.
وبالرغم من تلك الأهميّة للوصف؛ فإنه لم يحظَ بالعناية النقديّة الوافية إلا من قبل منظرين غربيين، وفي أواخر القرن الماضي أمثال (فيليب هامون) في كتابه (ما هو وصفي)، و(جان ميشال آدم) و(أندري بيتي جون) في كتابهما المشترك (النص الوصفي).
ومع أنّ الدراسات العربيّة الحديثة استفادت كثيراً من النظريات الغربيّة في تحليل مكونات الخطاب القصصي، فإنّ جلّها قد أولى السرد إهتمامه الأوّل، وظلّ يتعامل مع الوصف بإعتبار أن دوره هو لخدمة السياق السردي وحسب.
وقد أردتُ عبر هذه الدراسة الإسهام في تغيير تلك النظرة المغلوطة؛ من خلال الكشف عن أبرز وظائف الوصف، وأشهر أساليبه، وأهم تقنياته، ودوره في البناء الفني القصصي؛ متخذة من القصة القصيرة السعوديّة أنموذجاً أطبّق عليه أصول تلك النظرية.
