تمخض سقوط مترنيخ في الثورات التي اكتسحت أوروبا في 1848 عن تدشين حقبة قومية غير مسبوقة تكللت بإنهيار أسر هابسبرغ، رومانوف وهوهنزولرن الحاكمة في نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى؛ وعلى إمتداد فترة الأعوام السبعين الفاصلة التي هي موضوع هذا الكتاب، شهدت حدود أوروبا تغيُّراً مسرحياً مثيراً عما كانت عليه تلك المقررة في فيينا سنة 1815: تولى كافور ريادة حركة الريزورغيمنتو (Risorgimento) في إيطاليا؛ نجح بسمارك في إنجاز توحيد ألمانيا، في حين بقيت القوى العظمى متزاحمة على مكان تحت الشمس في أفريقيا.
في هذا الكتاب، وهو أحد أكثر كتبه دواماً، يقوم "آ.ج.ب. تيلور" بتسليط الضوء على كيفية قام ميزان القوة المتغير بتحديد مسار التاريخ الأوروبي خلال هذه المرحلة الأخيرة من مراحل كون أوروبا مركز العالم.
