ولم تعد الحرب العالمية الثانية من أحداث اليوم، وإنما صارت من أحداث الأمس، وهذا يلقي بأعباء جديدة على المؤرخين. وقد كانت أصول الحرب العالمية الثانية أقل جاذبية للناس الذين بدأوا في دراسة أصول الحرب العالمية الثالثة. ولا شك أن الحرب الجماعية فوق قدرة أي دولة كبرى، وإنه حتى يومنا هذا فإن الاستعداد لمثل هذه الحرب يهدد بدمار الدول الكبرى التي تحاول ذلك. فالبرغم من أن موضوع الدولة العظمى هو قدرتها على خوض غمار حرب كبرى، فإن الطريق الوحيد لكي تظل دولة كبرى هي ألا تحارب دولة أخرى، أو أن تحاربها في نطاق محدود.
