يناقش هذا الكتاب القضايا الأساسية في الإعلام: الملكية والإستقلال والموضوعية لكنه يتجاوز هذه المقولات، ويتناول بإسهاب الفرز الشائع لكن غير الدقيق بين صحافة "الخبر" وصحافة "الرأي"، ويتقصى المقارنات التي تعقد عادة بين الصحافة العربية والغربية والتي تنتهي دونما تدقيق إلى إدانة الأولى.
لقد حظي الإعلام العربي، في الفترة الأخيرة، بإهتمام فائق محلي وأجنبي، وبات يعوّل عليه كفاعل أساسي في التنمية والتطور السياسي لدرجة أن البعض يرى أنه لم يبلور الرأي العربي فحسب، وإنما خلق الجمهور العربي، وأجبر زعماء عرب على تغيير مواقفهم السياسية.
حول هذا الدور للصحافة يدور الكتاب، ويناقش آراء يورغن هابرماس عن "الفضاء العام" ومفاهيم بيير بورديو عن "المجال الصحافي" ويبحث في مدى ملاءمتها للأوضاع السياسية والإجتماعية والفكرية العربية؛ من أوجه الإختلاف التي يرصدها الكتاب تبرز ظاهرة الصحافي العربي الذي يتجاوز دوره ويتبنى دور السياسي بل يتعدى ذلك ليسبغ على السياسي شيئاً من "رأسماله الثقافي".
يشير الكتاب في هذا الصدد إلى محمد حسنين هيكل لكنه يتقصى آخرين مثل جهاد الخازن وطلال سلمان وعبد الباري عطوان ومأمون فندي؛ ومن جانبه يقوم رجل السلطة ليس بالسيطرة (حيازة مباشرة أو غير مباشرة، أو عبر القوانين) على وسائل الإعلام فحسب، وإنما يعمل على إمتلاك "الرأسمال الرمزي" فيعقد المؤتمرات عن الإعلام ويمنح الجوائز للنخبة من الصحافيين.
