كان ابن قدامة المقدسي إماماً في التفسير، وفي الحديث ومشكلاته، إماماً في الفقه، في الخلاف، إماماً في الخلاف، إماماً في أصول الفقه، وقد ترك الكثير من المؤلفات القيمة، ذات الموضوعات المهمة التي تمس الحاجة إليها، والكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته هو أحد مؤلفاته القيمة والذي ألفه في فقه الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، وقد توسط فيه بين الإطالة والاختصار، حيث أورد ما جاء في أبواب المسائل الفقهية على المذهب الحنبلي دون إطناب في الشرح ودون إحالات وتحليل، مع عزو كل حديث إلى مصدره، لذا ولما هو اسمه جاء كافياً في فنه عما سواه، مقنعاً لقارئه بما حواه، وافياً بالفرص من غير تطويل، جامعاً بين بيان الحكم والدليل. وجاء الكتاب محققاً حيث ضبط نصه وشرح ما فيه من مواقف المفردات والمعاني مع تخريج للأحاديث، وإحالات كثير من المعلومات إلى مصادرها.
