إن أقدم نظرية أخلاقية وصلت إلينا هي نظرية المعلم الأول أرسطو، وتعرف في الوسط العلمي الأخلاقي بـ(نظرية الأوساط) لأنها تعتبر الفضائل الأخلاقية الأربع (الحكمة والشجاعة والعفة والعدالة)، كل واحدة منهن وسطاً بين رذيلتين. ويعني أرسطو بالوسط -هنا- الاعتدال لأنه يقع وسطاً بين طرفي الإفراط والتفريط، فالشجاعة -مثلاً- هي وسط بين إفراط التهور وهي رذيلة، وتفريط الجبن وهي رذيلة أيضاً.
ويرى أرسطة أن الفضائل الأربع المذكورة هي نتاج الغرائز الأربع التي هي: العقل والغضب والشهوة والوهم. وقد انتشرت هذه النظرية انتشاراً واسعاً وهيمنت هيمنة كبيرة على الأجواء العلمية للتأليف والتدريس الأخلاقيين، وتأثر بها العلماء المسلمون، إلا أنهم طعموها بتعليمات القرآن الكريم ومعطيات الحديث الشريف.
وهذا ما نراه واضحاً في هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا والذي لم يكتف وفضيلة مؤلفه باستعراض الجانب الأخلاقي النظري والتركيز عليه، وإنما قرنه بالجانب التطبيقي، ولعل حاجتنا الماسة -الآن- إلى دراسة علم الأخلاق وقراءة ما يكتب فيه وعنه هي التي دعته إلى هذا.
