موضوع هذا البحث هو مدرسة أحمد بن إدريس الذي يعد أحد المصلحين الذين جمعوا بين الشريعة والحقيقة، وعرف بدعوته للاجتهاد في إطار الكتاب والسنة قول الصحابي، وبرفض الرأي فيما عدا ذلك، كما نادى بوحدة المسلمين، والاحتكام إلى الكتاب والسنة في كل شؤون الحياة، وأسس مدرسة في التصوف تميزت بالإيجابية والعناية بالفكر والتبشير. وعالم هذا شأنه ظل غير معروف لدى الباحثين، وإن عرفوه فمن خلال الحديث عن تلاميذه الذين نالوا الشهرة دونه.
هذا الإهمال من الباحثين هو الذي دعا الدكتور يحيى محمد إبراهيم إلى إعداد هذا البحث الذي نتحدث عنه والذي يتألف من مقدمة، ودراسة لمصادر البحث، وسبعة فصول وخاتمة يبحث الفصل الأول في نشأة أحمد بن إدريس وتعليمه ورحلته لمكة ونشاطه هناك وانتقاله لليمن، وأثره، ثم وفاته وتلي ذلك دراسة عن صفاته وشخصيته ومصادر ثقافته ومكانته العلمية ويشمل الفصل الثاني عرضاً لمكاتباته وأسلوبه وآثاره الخطية والمطبوعة. ويأتي الفصل الثالث شاملاً لأصول مدرسته وتعاليمه الصوفية. أما الفصل الرابع فينقص بآرائه في العقيدة والتفسير والفقه ولسياسة والمجتمع. ويقتصر الفصل الخامس على تلاميذه في ايمن ومصر وليبيا والحجاز. أما الفصل السادس فيقتصر على بيان الوضع الصوفي للسودان قبيل دخول تعاليم أحمد بن إدريس على يد محمد عثمان الميرغني. ويتضمن الفصل السابع والأخير أثر المدرسة في السودان من خلال نشاط تلاميذه وأتباعه وآثارهم الفكرية، ونشاطهم في نشر التعاليم، وتعقب ذلك الخاتمة التي تشمل عرضاً لأهم جوانب البحث.
