اتشيبي هو واحد من كبار الروائيين الأفريقيين الذين يكتبون بالإنكليزية. ويشكل هو وسيونكا ظاهرة متفردة في الأدب النيجيري. وهو يعبرّ في رواياته ودراساته عن مرحلة القلق والعنف التي تصاحب المجتمعات الأفريقية وهي تعاني الانتقال إلى نمط جديد.
