في روايتها "أبواب ضيّقة" تدخل سلوى جرّاح إلى الذاكرة العراقية، تلملمها، ترفو ثقوبها، عبر حركة مكوكية في السرد تتحرك، في آن، بين الحدق والذاكرة، بين الغائب والمتكلم، بين الحاضر والماضي، ناسجة شبكة من العلاقات، بين شخصيات عديدة، هي نسخة من أبناء وبنات جيلها في العراق، لتشكل الرواية مرآة لواقع حيّ عاشته الكاتبة يتراوح بين الإنسجام والرومانسية، إلى تناقضات الحياة الصارخة.
في هذه الرواية، تتخذ سلوى جراح من شخصية الكاتبة "نوار حمدي الصاحب" بطلة الرواية أنموذجاً للفتاة الطموحة المندفعة إلى عيش الحياة بكل تمفصلاتها، وتقبل الواقع كما هو في البداية، وبعد حين، تقفز فوقه إلى مصيرها المحتوم، فنراها – أي الكاتبة – تسرد حكايتها منذ أن كانت تلميذة في البصرة وانتقالها إلى كركوك بحكم عمل والدها، وهناك تتعرف نوار على صديقة رحلتها فاتن .. وخطوات الحب الأولى .. ثم الإنتقال إلى بغداد .. وبدء الحياة الجامعية في قسم اللغة الإنكليزية ، وهنا ايضاً تتعرف إلى عفراء التي تزرع فيها الأفكار الماركسية وتجرها للإنتماء إلى الحزب الشيوعي .. ثم تتعرف إلى فلاح وتنمو بينهما قصة حب صاخبة سوف تمر بمنعطفات تتمثل برحلة حبيبها إلى لبنان هرباً من الوضع السياسي في العراق، فتقرر الإلتحاق به سراً دون علم أهلها، تتزوج منه في بيروت، وتعمل في إحدى المؤسسات الفلسطينية في لبنان. وفي هذه الأثناء تندلع الحرب الأهلية في لبنان، فيسافر الزوجان إلى براغ، وبعد وقت قصير، يضطر الزوج للعودة إلى لبنان التزاماً بقرارات الحزب الذي ينتمي إليه. يحاول إقناع الزوجة بالعودة إلى لبنان، فترفض، وترحل من براغ إلى لندن، وهناك تبدأ رحلة عمل ومعاناة في صحيفة عربية، وتنتهي علاقتها بزوجها الذي يرسل إليها ورقة الطلاق في البريد .. في حين يبرز في عالمها الجديد شخص آخر صديق ومحب ومخلص.
