تحكي الرواية قصة سليم الذي نشأ يتيم الأم، بين يدي أب ظالم، وزوجة أب أكثر ظلماً، كان الناس حين يشاهدون مظلمته يتعاطفون معه بكلمة يا حرام، امتلأ قلبه بالحقد وحب الانتقام. عمل موظفا في إحدى المؤسسات في موقع لا مجال فيه للرشوة، كانت فاطمة زوجته صابرة على فقره وغضبه، تربي أولادها راضية صابرة. انتقل الى موقع سكرتير المدير، مديره أطلق يده في الرشوة، بشرط أن تكون له منها الحصة الأكبر، فتعلم بسرعة قصوى كل أساليب النصب والاحتيال، وامتلأت جيوبه بالمال الحرام، زوجته فاطمة رفضت أن تأكل وأولادها المال الحرام، فتخلى عنها وعن أولادها وتزوج منال، التي تملك بيتا صغيرا، استولى على بيت منال ثم طلقها ليتزوج الدكتورة سعاد، سلبها ما لديها وتخلى عنها، أتبعها بوداد، لكنها كانت أقوى منه، فسلبته بيت منال. عاد الى القرية لينتقم من أبيه، ومن زوجة أبيه وكل من كانوا يقولون يا حرام، وذلك بإذلالهم بأمواله، تسلطت عليه عصابة، أشبعوه مديحاً وتوجوه سيداً عليهم، أعجبته السيادة فراح يعطي بسخاء، بنى في القرية قصراً، سكنته العصابة كحاشية له، وحين اكتشف مديره أنه يغل من أموال الرشوة ولا يعطيه ما اتفقا عليه، غضب منه وطرده من منصبه، راح يدور على الناس المساكين، يبتزهم وينصب عليهم ويبيعهم الوعود الكاذبة. انكشف أمره لأفراد العصابة فخلعوا عنه لقب السيادة وطردوه من قصره، هام على وجهه في الدروب بعدما أفلس، وراح يفكر بالعودة إلى زوجته الأولى، التي رفضت المال الحرام.
