يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى تحقيق هدفٍ مزدوج، ذلك لأنّه يقصد من جهةٍ إلى تقديم وَصْفٍ مفضَّل للعمليّة التاريخيّة التي من خَلالها وُلِدَ مفهومُ الإيمانِ، ونما، وطُوِّر نظريّاً بين جمهرة المسلمين.
ومن جهة أخرى، يهدف إلى إعداد تحليل دلالي واعٍ لـ "الإيمان" ولمفهوماتٍ مفتاحيّة آخر مرتبطة به، مع الشبكات المفهوميّة التي نسجتها هذه الأخيرةُ فيما بينها.
وينطلقُ الأستاذُ إيزوتسو في اختيار موضوع دراسته من كَوْن "الإيمان" تاريخيّاً لمفهومَ الأوّلَ والأهمَّ بين المفهومات الكلاميّة جميعاً في الإسلام، ومن كونه قد أثار في القرون القليلة الأولى من عمر الثقافة الإسلاميّة كثيراً من المسائل والنقاشات الحادّة المهمّة.
ويجيء عملهُ تحليلاً منهجيّاً لهذه المسائل والنقاشات وللمفهومات الرّئيسة التي عبّرت عنها ولخّصت أُطُرَ التفكير فيها.
ويبدو المؤلّفُ شديدَ الإلحاح على إعلام قارئ كتابه بأنّ صنيعَه في الكتاب لا يعدو أن يكون دراسةَ لمفهوم الإيمان كما طوّره نظريّاً علماءُ الكلام المسلمون، وأنّ علم الكلام الإسلاميّ ليس في وسعه أن يعالج معالجةَ شاملةً مسائلَ الإيمان التي عَمرَت قلوبَ المسلمين على إمتداد العصور.
ويعني هذا، عنده، أنّ المعالجة الكّلاميّة (نسبةً إلى علم الكلام) المدرسيّة لمفهوم الإيمان أقربُ إلى مُلامسة الجانب الخارجيّ الشّكْليّ للمسألة؛ ذلك لأنها معالجةٌ عقليّة لمسألة وجْدانيّة ضاربة الجذور في أعماق النفس، لكنّ هذا الخارجيّ الذهنيّ، فيما يرى، تجلٍّ ذاتيّ لـ"الدّاخليّ".
ويلخّص القضيةَ على هذا النحو: "الإيمانُ من وجهة كونه مفهوماً كلاميّاً يعكس ويكشف، وإن يكن ذلك على نحو خاصّ جدّاً، الطبيعةَ الحقيقيةَ لــ "الإيمان" بوصفه حدثاً وجوديّاً an existential event، أي شيئاً عاشه فعليّاً في مسيرة التاريخ المؤمنون المسلمون وعَمَرَ قلوبهم.
