يعد البحث في الشعر العربي المعاصر ضرباً من المجازفة والمخاطرة، لا سيما بعد التحول الذي شهده هذا الشعر في بداية هذا القرن، ومن ثمّ كانت التجربة الشعرية الجديدة أوسعَ مجالاً للبحث والدراسة، وأشقَّ على الدارس في الوقت نفسه، ومردّ ذلك أنّ النص الشعري المعاصر لم يعد يعتمد الإستعارة والتشبيه والمقابلة وحسب؛ بل تعدّى ذلك إلى أنماط وأشكال فنيّة متنوعة، يأتي في مقدمتها الرمز والأسطورة.
ولا شكَّ أنَّ الرمز يحتل مساحة معتبرة في الشعر العربي الحديث، فقد جعل الشعراء منه مطيّة إلى كشف رؤاهم، والتعبير عن حالاتهم ومعاناتهم في هذا العصر الذابل المتشابك، وأدّى ذلك إلى تلوين نصوصهم الشعرية بسَحْنَاءَ رماديّةٍ، يصعب تبيّن ما وراءَها، وبذا كان الغموض أول ما عيب على هذا الشعر.
وقد عمد المؤلف في هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة النصوص الشعرية دراسةً وصفية تحليليّة بإستقرائها والنظر في بعض تراكيبها اللغوية وصلتها بالرمز الجزئي، ثمّ بالرمز العام، ثمّ بسياق النص، كما عمد إلى أسلوب الموازنة بين نصوص الشاعر الواحد، وبين الشعراء أيضاً.
وأما الخطة المسلوكة، فقد ضمّ الكتاب مدخلاً وأربعة فصول، ففي المدخل كان حديثه عن الرمز والرمزيين حديثاً مقتضباً، أما أقسام الكتاب الأخرى فقد عرض المؤلف في أولها الرمز البسيط الأحادي، وكيف أن الشعراء راحوا يرتكزون على عصيّ الأنبياء ويتوكّأون عليها، ويأتي الفصل الثاني ليكشف دلالات ومستويات الرموز المركّبة، إذ أن هناك رموزاً لا نبلغ دلالاتها إلا بإجتماعها، ووجودها في سياق واحد، على سبيل المثال: قابيل وهابيل، آدم وحواء... إلخ.
وأما الفصل الثالث فقد جعلنه لدراسة الصورة في الشعر الفلسطيني المعاصر، وعلاقتها بالرمز من خلال بعض النماذج، بعدها درس في الفصل الرابع نصّين شعريين دراسة تطبيقية، معتمداً طريقة الموازنة، والنصّان هما قصيدة درويش "أنا يوسف يا أبي"، وقصيد صلاح الصافوطي "إنكسارات في رؤيا يوسف".
