في مطلع هذا القرن، كان الاستعمار التركي البغيض ما يزال باسطاً جناحيه على البلاد العربية يستغل ثرواتها وينهب خيراتها، ويذل أبناءها، مستعياً على ظلمه وتعسفه واضطهاده بالزاعمات المحلية الإقطاعية التي كانت تسوم الناس سفر العذاب، ينهبون أرزاقهم ويسفرونهم لخدمة الدولة وخدمتهم، ويمنعون عنهم نور العلم والمعرفة. في هذا الجو العابس وجد الأدباء والشعراء العامليون أن الشعر أفضل سبيل يسلكونه للتنفيس عن هذا الكبت والجور والحرمان والاضطهاد، فأخذوا ينظمون الشعر والقصائد الطوال بتهكم وسخرية لاذعة لاستنهاض الهمم وإثارة الشعور الوطني. والشعر هو السلاح الوحيد الذي كانوا يستطيعونه وهذا أحد عشرائهم الشيخ عباس البلاغي يصور في أبياته هذه النقمة الشعبية المكبوعة على مظالم الحكام الأتراك والإقطاع آنذاك فيقولك: "طغت اسفهاءً عامل في البلاد، وفيها أظهروا كل الفسادِ. لقد ظلموا العباد ولم يخافوا من الرحمن في ظلم العباد". وستقرأ لهذا الشاعر ولغيره الكثير من هذه الأشعار في صفحات هذا الكتاب، وإلى جانب هذا الشعر القاتم ستقرأ له النوع الآخر من الأدب الضاك والطرائف والمُلح والمراسلات الأخوانية.
