مثّل الأحناف نهاية حقبة طويلة من الصراع بين التوحيد والشرك، ومثّل ظهور الإسلام مرحلة جديدة من هذا الصراع. وفي هذا الكتاب تم الوقوف على موقف الشاعر أمية بن أبي الصلت من دعوة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، من خلال الشعر، حيث تبين أنه الشاعر الوحيد في تاريخ الشعر العربي الذي أوقف جلّ شعره على موضوعة الدين بشكل عام وموضوعة الحنيفية بشكل خاص. يتجسد ذلك من خلال قصائده التي تناولت موضوع الخلق وقصص الأنبياء والمرسلين وما جرى لهم، وكذلك مسألة الآخرة وما سيلاقيه الإنسان بعد موته من مصير.
سيجد القارىء لهذا الكتاب أن لغة شعر أمية تقترب كثيراً من لغة القرآن الكريم، ويتضح ذلك جلياً من خلال استلهام الشاعر لروح الإسلام في شعره. وقد تم للمؤلف الإستشهاد في هذه المجالات بشعر أمية الذي كان يمثله خير تمثيل، بعد استبعاده القصائد الضعيفة والمشكوك بنسبتها إلى الشاعر.
يقع الكتاب في أربعة فصول: تناول الفصل الأول: البواكير الأولى للحنيفية في موطن سيدنا إبراهيم عليه السلام، والدوافع التي كانت وراء الإنسان في توجهاته الدينية والديانة الحنيفية من حيث التسمية والمصطلح وما قيل في ذلك. أما الفصل الثاني فقد تم فيه تسليط الضوء على الأحناف قبيل البعثة النبوية، من خلال تناول مسألة التوحيد عند العرب قبل الإسلام ... وتناول الفصل الثالث أمية بن أبي الصلت، من حيث النسب والأسرة والنشأة والثقافة (بيئة الشاعر). وأهل الطائف وديانتهم وعلاقتهم بمكة وموقفهم من الإسلام. ومن خلال الفصل الرابع تم للمؤلف تناول شخصية أمية بن ابي الصلت من حيث سلوكه الحنيفي، وما ألزم نفسه من العبادات والأوامر والنواهي وموقفه من الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم. وكذلك موقف الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم من أمية. هذا بالإضافة إلى تناول مصادر شعر أمية ومنزلته الشعرية وأغراض شعره: كالوصف والحكمة والمديح والرثاء والفخر، وما ورد في هذه الأغراض من شعر وكذلك آراء النقاد بشعره ومنزلته الشعرية بين اقرانه.
