البحوث الواردة في هذا الكتاب تتعلق بجوانب معجمية ونحوية عميقة، مبينة على تصور جديد للمعجم، يفرز فكرتين أساسيتين، الأولى هي أن المفردات ما هي إلا بنيات مركبية مكبوسة، والكلمة تجميع لما كان يمكن أن يكون جملاً.
ومن هنا كان تحليل المفردة لا يختلف أساساً عن تحليل الجملة، وضوابط النحو (بالمعنى العام الذي يعني نظام القواعد) لا تنطبق على الجمل فقط، بل تنطبق كذلك على المفردات، والفكرة الثانية هي أن المَعجَمَة لا يمكن أن تكون محدودة في الكلمات أو المفردات، بل إن الوحدة المعجمية قد تكون مفككة ومبعثرة في عدد من الكلمات.
ومن جهة أخرى، فإن رصد إختلاف اللغات في نحوها ومعجمها لم يعد سهلاً، كما كان يبدو قبل البرنامج التوليدي، وهكذا يبدو أن التنميط التقليدي المبني على القرابة السلالية بين اللغات لم يعد صالحاً، ثم إن التنميط النسقي، الذي يمثل بديلاً معقولاً، يحتاج إلى كثير من التدقيق؛ ويفتح البحث في المعجم كذلك آفاقاً أكيدة لحصر الميكانيزمات المحدودة التي توظفها اللغات من أجل التباين.
وعلاوة على هذا، فإن مفاهيم تقليدية راسخة مثل الفعل أو المفعول أو التعدي، إلخ، تبدو غامضة غير محدودة، حينما تدفق النظر في العناصر التي تتيح تكوينها.
