يحكي هذا الكتاب قصة رومل الملقب بثعلب الصحراء، ومذكراته السرية حين كان العراف يرزح تحت نير الإحتلال الثان، حيث كانت ترد أخبار انتصارات رومل في الصحراء وكأنها ضرباً من الخيال.
تأتي أهمية هذه المذكرات من كون رومل تغلب على العقلية العسكرية الألمانية الصلبة، وكان من كبار الضباط الألمان في الفيلق الإفريقي، وتمتع بمرونة وذكاء ودهاء بالطرائق الحربية قل مثيلها... يقول العميد "طه الهاشمي" عن المارشال رومل في مقدمة الكتاب: "... والواقع أن العمليات الخاطفة التي قام بها رومل من طرابلس الغرب نحو بنغازي وبرقة ومباغتته لقلعةطبرق وفتحها عنوة في مدة قصيرة لا يكاد العقل يصدقها، ثم قطعة صحراء مصر الغربية مطارداً فلول الجيش البريطاني في الرمال المحرقة والغازات الخانقة كانت من العمليات الحربية النموذجية التي لا مثيل لها في التاريخ العسكري. ولم لم تعترض دباباته خنادق العلمين وجداوله الإصطناعية التي شقت بين البحر ومنخفض القطارة لكان للحرب في الشرق الأدنى شأن وأي شأن (...)". وعن تجربته في الحرب يقول رومل: "... هناك فرقاً بين الجرأة في العمليات أو التكتيكات، وبين المغامرة العسكرية. فالعملية الجريئة ليست إلا فرصة واحدة للنجاح، ولكن إذا قدر لها الفشل، فستترك للقائد قوات سليمة كافية تمكنه من معالجة الموقف، والثبات على قدميه. أما المغامرة العسكرية، فهي إما أن تقود إلى النصر، وإما أن تحطم القوة التي تستخدم فيها كل التحطيم".
هذا الكتاب سيرة مقاتل شجاع إلى حد الخرافة، يهاجم وحده ببندقية خالية من الطلقات ويزحف بعد سهر أسبوع كامل.
