Les carnets d’Idris est une adaptation abrégée, faite par l’auteur, d’Awraq, livre écrit en arabe et publié en 1989.
Le livre décrit l’éducation, intellectuelle et sentimentale, d’Idris, héros principal de deux récits précédents, al-Ghurba (L’exile, 1971) el al- Yatim (L’orphelin, 1978).
Idris a souffert sous le régime du protectorat et végété dans le Maroc indépendant. ll meurt sans avoir tenu les promesses que sa culture et son talent laissaient espérer.
Ses deux amis, aux choix idéologiques opposés, tentent ensemble de donner un sens à sa vie.
