إنَّ محاولة العرض الشامل لمجمل مبادىء المسائل والاتجاهات التربوية فيعالم اليوم والغد، مشروع صغير أو ضئيل وطموحفيآن واحد. إنَّه صغير أو ضئيل باعتباره ليس سوى وصف بسيط للواقع والحوادث التربوية، وطموح لأنَّه ينطلق من التأكيد على حتمية التجديد التربوي والذي نرى تباشيره هنا وهناك لا بل في كل مكان. إن الخطّ الموجّه لعملنا هو المحاضرة العالمية حول التربية التي عقدت في جنيف عام 1975، حيث تم التركيز فيها على المتغيرات الحديثة التي طرأت على السياسات التربوية وعلى مسألة حق الحصول على التعليم وخاصة التعليم العالي، وعلى التجديد التربوي والتربية المستمرة، وعلى تأهيل المعلمين. ومن بين الإهتمامات العالمية الملحة اليوم نجد أن مسألة التجديد التربوي هي الموضوع الرئيس لكل المناظرات الحالية حول التربية. ومنذ السـتينات، فإن الأزمة العالمية للتربية كانت الشغل الشاغل لكثير من بلدان العالم وبخاصة في الأوساط التي تهتم بالمسائل التربوية. ففي أكتوبر عام 1976 تمت في وليامسبورغ Williamsburgمحاضرة عالمية حول هذا الموضوع، وحول هذه المسألة بالذات عرض فيليب كومبزPhilippe Coombs تحليله للوضع التربوي الراهن بعنوان: " الأزمة العالمية للتعليم " وقبل ذلك بثلاث سنوات نشرت اللجنة العالمية من أجل التطوير التربويالتابعة لليونسكو برئاسة إدكار فور E.Foure تقريرها بعنوان: "تعلَّم لتكون" (APPRENDRE A e tre). إنّ حوادث الطلاب الشهيرة في شهر أيار في فرنسا عام 1968 كانت الشرارة الأولى لتفجير تلك الأزمة، التي رأى فيها البعض دليلاً على الأزمة التي تعاني منها بعض المجتمعات.
