في الأندلس، من القرن التاسع إلى الثالث عشر، عندما كانت قرطبة، أكبر مدينة في العالم، بعدد سكانها حينئذ، وخاصة بإشعاعها الثقافي، كانت قلب هذا العالم النابض، نشأت نظرة للعالم وللإنسان ولله مبنية على تطور شامل للعقل. وعن ذلك تحدّر العلم التجريبي، كما اعترف بذلك "روجيه بيكون" الذي نشر إشعاعه على أوروبا بأكملها. هذا العلم لم يكن أبداً منفصلاً عن الحكمة وعن التفكير في غايات البحث، ولا عن الإيمان، فالإيمان المنطوي على الاعتراف بحدود العلم وبمسلماته وبالحكمة كان في منظور الإسلام الأندلسي، عقلاً بلا حدود.
يكشف روجيه غارودي على صفحات هذا الكتاب هذه الحقائق وذلك عبر رسم مسار الإسلام الأندلسي معكوساً، وغرضه من وراء ذلك أن يحدّد تلك المغامرة الرفيعة من التلاقح في الأندلس، حيث لا ينفصل المنظور اليهودي والمسيحي والمسلم أحدهما عن الآخر، بالإضافة إلى ذلك إن الحضارة الإسلامية يمكنها أن تتوجه من جديد نحو الحياة، وقبل ذلك نحو البقاء. لأن التفكير في الغايات وفي الإيمان يطرح مشكلة الأبعاد الأخلاقية للمسألة النووية، لغزو الفضاء، للتدخل الوراثي في علم الأحياء، تماماً كما يطرح مشكلة النمو الاقتصادي، والغاية من ذلك، هو تنسيق قدراتنا الجديدة لغايات إنسانية سامية وبمعنى آخر إلهية.
