شخصيات الرواية تلتقي في شقة متواضعة أطلقوا عليها اسم النجمة. وهي تقع في حي مشهور من أحياء بغداد هو حي البتاوين. في هذه الشقة تجري حوارات حول الأحداث اليومية في العراق، وتحكى قصص عن الخطف، والقتل على الهوية، وتترجع أصداء التفجيرات وهي تلف الأفق. فالعاصمة تعيش وسط ايقاع العام 2006، وتنتشر فيها ميليشيات، وجيوش أجنبية، وتدور فيها صراعات بين أحزاب ومدن وطوائف. ووسط كل ذلك تحاول شخصيات الرواية ايجاد جدوى لحياتها، وقراءة معالم بغداد كشارع الرصيد والبتاوين وأبو نؤاس، وممارسة طقوسها الحياتية من مغامرات نسائية، ومعاقرة خمور، وتداول أخبار العالم الخارجي. وكأن القارئ يدخل الى عالم من قصص، وحكايات، وطرائف، تبدور أنها غير مترابطة، لكن يجمعها في النهاية جو شقة النجمة الذي يشرف على سطوح بيوت بغداد، ومآذنها، وعماراتها البعيدة، ونخيلها الذي يبدو مثل غابة من الريش في وقت الغروب.
