كتب آرنولد بنت "الفندق الكبير" وقد نشرت آنذاك في حلقات متسلسلة في مجلة أسبوعية شعبية واسعة الانتشار. تبدأ أحداث القصة في لندن في أحد فنادق أوروبا. فالفندق الكبير مجهز بالأثاث الفاخر والسجاد الشرقي الثمين، وفيه مستنبت لأجمل أنواع الزهور تتوسطه نافورة بديعة، ويسيطر عليه-إجمالاً-جو من الهدوء والرصانة والأرستقراطية. نزل الفندق مليونير أميركي متهور هو ثيودورو راكسول ومعه ابنته نلا. طلبت نلا طبقاً معيناً للعشاء، ولكنه لم يقدم لها لأنه لم يكن مدرجاً على قائمة الطعام. فقام المليونير بشراء الفندق من مالكه السيد فيلكس باببل، وطلب الطبق الذي تريديه ابنته. سارت الأمور في الفندق بشكل طبيعي، بعد انتقال ملكيته، إلى أن بدأت أمور محيرة تحدث كقيام الموظفين بتصرفات غريبة، وتحطيم زجاج بعض الغرف بالحجارة، وأخذت تتردد في قاعات الفندق الفخم وممراته أحاديث غامضة عن مكائد ومؤامرات. وغاية آرنولد بنت من هذه الرواية أن تكون قصة مرحة خفيفة الظل، وفي الوقت عينه، قصة مغامرات شيقة تدفع القارئ إلى متابعة أحداثها بشغف حتى الخاتمة.
