"إني أؤمن إيماناً مطلقاً بكل ما جاء في هذه الصفحات. وقد رسخ هذا الإيمان في نفسي منذ أن بدأت اختبر الناس. إلا أنه يبدو لي أني أستطيع أن أتبنى، بكل صدق وإخلاص، رأياً مناقضاً لهذا الرأي، وأن أبادر إلى العمل في سبيل إظهار عظمة المرأة. ويخيل إليّ أحياناً أني...
وتوقف عن الكلام برهة، ثم قال: اسمعي، سأروي لك قصة: كان في إحدى المدارس صبي يضطهده أحد أساتذته اضطهاداً مستمراً، ويتحامل عليه تحاملاً بغيضاً. وذات يوم، في أواخر السنة المدرسية، في شهر حزيران، استدعى الأستاذ ذلك الصبي، فجاء هذا مشرئب الرأس كالديك، متوتر الأعصاب نقمةً، وقال لأستاذه: اعتقد أنك ما استدعيتني إلا لتجد عليّ مأخذاً جديداً. فأجاب الأستاذ: لا،بل استدعيتك لأني سأغادر المدرسة نهائياً، ولن يتسنى لأحدنا أن يرى الآخر بعد اليوم. وأود أن أقول لك إني ما اضطهدتك إلا لأني أحببتك حباً عظيماً. أما الآن فهات يدك لأصافحها، ثم أذهب في سبيلك. فتصافحا، وافترقا، وتمت نبوءة الأستاذ، فما تسنى لأحدهما أن يرى الآخر بعد ذلك اليوم. فسألته المرأة الشابة، وقد عقدت حاجبيها: ما معنى هذه الحكاية؟ أليس معناها واضحاً؟ وكانت قد أدارت وجهها إليه وهو جالس خلفها، فراحت تبحث في عينيه ككل امرأة حقيقية لتعلم أتستطيع الاطمئنان إليه، وليس لفتهم شيء آخر. أما هو فكان أبداً يبتسم لأشياء أخرى".
تتجلى براعة المؤلف في إخراج هذه الرواية بقالب روائي آخاذ ووصف رائع لأحاسيس النفس البشرية. حيث الخوف من الحقيقة يكون بدافع الجبن أو البلاهة. والمؤلف يعتبر الألم المعنوي عاملاً للتعمق في التفكير. وهو يصلح لبعث اعتبار المتألم في نفوس الناس ولحثهم على الاعتناء به.
إن هذه الرواية تعرض ملامح حضارة سادت خلال القوى الاجتماعية كلها فأنشأت منظمة ضخمة تتضاءل دونها كل القوى وليست الغاية منهما إلا حشد الإمكانات الجبارة لتعزيز مركز المرأة وإظهارها بغير حقيقتها. وهذه العبادلة الوثنية للمرأة تجرّ الرجل إلى التخلي عن حريته واستقلاله وكرامته. وتؤدي إلى أفظع أنواع الفوضى.
والمرأة تبسط سلطانها على الرغم من افتقارها الراهن إلى الكفاءة وعلى الرغم من عجزها حتى في نطاقها الخاص، وسبب ذلك يعود إلى حماقة الرجل الناجمة جزئياً عن الشهوة الجنسية فالرجل حين يشتهي يمدح الشيء المشتهى ليحصل على رضاه.
