هنري ميلون دي مونترلان كاتب فرنسي عريق النسب، من الطبقة التي حافظت على طابعها الأرستقراطية في ترف العيش، وأناقة التفكير والتعبير، والتصرف المشوب بالاستهتار، وطلب المتعة المعنوية والمادية في جو خاص تسوده حرية لا تقرها المبادئ الخلقية دائماً، ولم تألفه العامة.
وضع رواية عنوانها "مصارعو الضواري" وألف تمثيليات أهمها: "سيد سنتياغو"، و"الملكة الميتة"، و"بور رويال"، فاحتل مرتبة مرموقة في طليعة الكتاب الناجحين. وبعد سكون طويل أصدر هذه السلسلة المؤلفة من أربع حلقات متماسكة ومتلاحقة، وهي: "الفتيات"، و"رحمة للنساء"، "وشيطان الخير"، و"الموبوءات"، ففتحت له أبواب الأكاديمية الفرنسية، إلا أنه دخلها دون احتفال، وفي ما يشبه تكتم الحياء.
ليست هذه السلسلة قطة طويلة، ولا رواية متسلسلة، إنما هي دراسة واقعية، موضوعية، لا يفوتها شيء من الصراحة، لكنها ليست عارية، ولا خالعة العذار، تعمد فيها المؤلف دقة الوصف، فما تردد في سرد التفاصيل الحميمة، إلا أنه استطاع البقاء في مستوى أدبي راق وفوق البذاءة، فإذا به يعري دون فسوق، ويحلل الخطيئة دون تبذل، ويتبسط في عرض المشاهد الغرامية دون أن يفسد الأخلاق، أو يزرع بذور الرذيلة في النفوس. ففي وصفه، وتحليله، وسرده، نفحة أدبية تصرف الأذهان عن التفكير بمادية الموصوف، ونزعة تكاد تكون علمية في أمانتها على إبراز الطبيعة البشرية خالية من اللبس والغموض.
وأراد المؤلف التخصص في درس جانب معين من المجتمع الفرنسي، وحصر نفسه في هذه السلسلة بين نماذج من الفتيات والنساء، فكان أنه تعمق في الخصوصيات، وأشبعها درساً حتى بلغ قرارة الطبيعة البشرية، فنفذ منها إلى العموميات، إلى ما هو "حقيقة إنسانية" في كل زمان ومكان. وقد يكون هذا الشمول جوهر أدبه، والقيمة العليا التي تجعل من هذه السلسلة مؤلفاً وافر الحظ تسنم ذروة الخلود.
ويجد القارئ في هذه الكتب الأربعة ملاحظات تستوقفه وتدعوه إلى التفكير والتأمل، لأنه يكتشف حيالها في نفسه "أشياء" كان يحسها بغموض، فإذا بها تتضح وتبدو جلية سافرة. وهذا م ا عنيناه بنفاذ المؤلف إلى العموميات من خلال إمعانه في تحليل الخصوصيات.
