"هذا الكتاب قصة بوليسية إلى حد ما، فبعد الحادي عشر من سبتمبر عرفت أننا نعيش في عالم جديد، إن كان الأمر بحاجة إلى مزيد من التدعيم، هو ذلك العالم ذو الإقتصاد الرأسمالي العالمي الذي يتسم بقدر من المرونة، ومقاومة الصدمات، والإنفتاح، والقدرة على تصحيح نفسه، وسرعة التغير على نحو يزيد عما كان عليه الحال قبل ربع قرن من الآن، وهو أيضاً ذلك عالم يتيح لنا إمكانيات جديدة ضخمة بينما يفرض علينا في الوقت ذاته تحديات جِسام.
إن "عصر التحديات" هو محاولتي لفهم طبيعة هذا العالم الجديد؛ كيف وصلنا إلى ما نحن عليه، وما الذي نعيشه، وما الذي يوجد هناك وراء الأفق، خيراً كان أم شراً، وحينما يسمح الحال، فإنني انقل فهمي داخل سياق تجربتي، وأنا أفعل ذلك من باب الإحساس بالمسؤولية تجاه السجل التاريخي، ولكي يعرف القراء من أين جئت.
ولهذا السبب ينقسم الكتاب إلى نصفين: النصف الاول هو سعيي لتتبع قوس منحنى تعلمي، والنصف الثاني جهد أكثر موضوعية لإستخدام ذلك كأساس أقيم عليه إطاراً مفاهيمياً لفهم الإقتصاد العالمي الجديد.
وفي الطريق استكشف العناصر النقدية الخاصة بالبيئة العالمية الناشئة، وبنية الطاقة التحتية الشاسعة التي تمدها بالقوة، والإختلالات المالية العالمية والتغيرات الدراماتيكية في الديموجرافيا العالمية التي تهددها، والإنشغال المزمن بشأن عدالة توزيع مكافآتها بالرغم من نجاحاً الذي لا يشك فيه أحداً.
وأخيراً فإنني أجمع بين ما يمكن أن نفترضه على نحو معقول بشأن تركيبة الإقتصاد العالمي في عام 2030.
