يقوم أساس هذا العمل على فقرتين مستلتين من مشروع كتاب حول تاريخ الصلات الثقافية بين مشرق الوطن العربي ومغربه عبر العصور. وقد رأى الدكتور "محمد ابن شريفة" أن ينشر منه قبل إخراجه هاتين الفقرتين حول عناية المغاربة بشاعري العربية الكبيرين الطائي والمتنبي وتأثيرهما في الآداب العربية ببلدان المغرب.
وهو يقول بأنه جمعها في قرن بهذا الكتاب لأن أهل المغرب كانوا يطلقون تثنية "الشعرين" على شعر أبي تمام وشعر أبي الطيب، ويقولون في ابن هانئ وابن دراج إنهما "نظيران لحبيب والمتنبي"، ولأن بعض الشراح والنقاد القدماء جمعوا بينهما كمؤلف "النظام، في شرح ديواني المتنبي وأبي تمام" ومؤلف "المآخذ الكندي من المعاني الطائية"، ومؤلف "نزهة الأدبي في سرقات المتنبي من حبيب.
ثم إن نشر هذه الرسالة الأخيرة في ذيل هذا الكتاب اقتضى من الدكتور ابن شريفة الجمع بين الشاعرين والتعريف بمكانتهما عند المغاربة. وشفع هذا النص، الذي عثر عليه وحققه وعرف بصاحبه، باختيارات من نسخة ديوان المتنبي السعدية المنصورية، وهي نسخة نفيسة مقابلة على أصول أندلسية ومغربية عتيقة ذات طرار مأخوذة من "منصف" ابن وكيع في معظمها، وهذه الطرر مفيدة في ترميم "المنصف" وتتميم الناقص منه، وفي هذه النسخة المنصورية أيضاً زيادات على ما في دواوين المتنبي المطبوعة تنشر هنا لأول مرة.
وهذا وتدور موضوعات هذه الدراسة حول الأسانيد والشروح والآثار النقدية، والمعارضات وغيرها من الموضوعات المتعلقة بأبي تمام والمتنبي في الأندلس والمغرب. وقد جمعت مادة هذه الموضوعات من مختلف المظان المطبوعة والمخطوطة كما واستدل بمخطوطات لم تكن معروفة من قبل كشرح الأعلم الشنتمري على شعر أبي تمام وشرحه أيضاً على الشعر الذي قاله المتنبي في صباه.
