جاءت فكرة تأليف هذا الكتاب (أساسيات نظم المعلومات الجغرافية) انسجاماً لمبدأ الأصالة والتجديد في منهجية الجغرافيا، وتيسير مادة أكاديمية علمية متقدمة بين أيدي الطلبة والقراء والمساهمة في ميادين نقل التقنيات الحديثة لتطوير المنهج العلمي الجغرافي وإضافة جديدة للمكتبة العربية.
وبعد أن أدرك المؤلف إن أقسام الجغرافيا في الجامعات العربية يجب أن تواكب تقنية نظم المعلومات والمعلوماتية، والسير قدماً في تحديث مقرراتها التي تهتم بأمور التنمية المكانية، لما لهذه التقنية من فطنة مبكرة وتنبه واع للأمور والقضايا البيئية والتنموية، والتأكيد على إعداد الخريج الجغرافي المهاري المتمرس والذي يستطيع أن ينافس في معترك سوق العمل.
وقد احتوى الكتاب على ستة فصول حيث خصص الفصل الأول: ماهية نظم المعلومات الجغرافية، مفهومها وتطورها وأهميتها وعلاقتها بالعلوم والأنظمة الأخرى. وعالج الفصل الثاني: المكونات الأساسية لنظم المعلومات الجغرافية. وشمل الفصل الثالث: وظائف نظم المعلومات الجغرافية. ويتكون الفصل الرابع: أنواع نظم المعلومات الجغرافية وتناول الفصل الخامس: قواعد البيانات الجغرافية. وأفرد الفصل السادس: بعض البرامج والمصطلحات المستخدمة في نظم المعلومات الجغرافية. وقد راعى المؤلف أن يكون عرض المعلومات مبسطاً ومدعوماً بأمثلة وأشكال توضيحية.
