إن التطور تقنيات الحاسوب الأثر الفاعل في خدمة الإنسان وفي كافة مجالات الحياة، ومن تلك التقنيات المهمة نظم المعلومات الجغرافية GIS والتي تمت الإستفادة منها في كل مفاصل الحياة العلمية والعملية، فعملت على تقديم أفضل الخدمات للإنسان من خلال ما توفره تلك النظم من معلومات سواء ما يتعلق منها بالجوانب الطبيعية التي لا علاقة للإنسان بوجودها والنشاطات البشرية.
وتعمل GIS على توفير المعلومات بأشكال مختلف كالخرائط والأشكال البيانية والجداول والتقارير، وتستخدم نظم المعلومات في إدارة المرافق والخدمات العامة والمؤسسات، وتوفير المعلومات لأصحاب القرار، وتحليل البيانات لأغراض عسكرية وعلمية، وغير ذلك من الجوانب التي تستخدم فيها GIS.
وفي هذا الكتاب سيتم تناول تعريف GIS وأهميتها ومكوناتها الأساسية ووظائفها وبرامجها وتطبيقاتها، وبشكل مبسط بحيث يستطيع طلبة المرحلة الجامعية والدراسات العليا والباحثين العلميين الإستفادة منه، والتعرف على ماهية تلك النظم وأهميتها، حيث تم التركيز على الجوانب المهمة والأساسية وعدم التوسع في تناول جميع الجوانب التي تتعلق بتلك النظم لأنها تحتاج إلى أكثر من كتاب أو كتاب على أشكل أجزاء، كما تم الرجوع إلى أحدث المصادر في جمع المعلومات وخاصة الإنترنت الذي يعد المصادر الأساسي لمعلومات هذا الكتاب، كما رتبت الفصول بشكل متسلسل حسب ما تتطلبه مناهج دراسة النظم.
ومن الجدير بالذكر أن GIS لا يعني أنها تخص الجغرافيا فقط بل تشمل جميع المجالات التي تعتمد على بيانات ذات بعد مكاني، لذا تسمى نظم المعلومات الجغرافية، والجغرافيا علم يجمع بين العلوم الطبيعية والبشرية.
