عندما نتأمل الطبيعة، وعندما نرى اللوحات أو التماثيل في المتاحف والمعارض، وخطوط الآيات القرآنية في المساجد... فمعنى ذلك أن هذه الأعمال الفنية التي نعجب بجمالها تتجاوز المرحلة التي ولدت فيها، وتصبح معاصرة دائماً. إن الفن إنساني، يظهر الإنسانية من الألم، أنه يكشف الاستغلال ويحذّر الناس من عناصر النشر، إنه يغذّي الشعوب المستضعفة بروح الرفض والثورة ضد الظالم والقسوة والدكتاتورية.
ويمثل هذا البحث الذي بين يدينا مدخلاً لجملة قضايا ومبادئ في الفن والجمال؛ وهو مقسم بشكل عام إلى أربعة فصول؛ تحدث المؤلف في الأول منها عن معنى لفظة الجمال، وعن الذي يجعل الإنسان يبحث عن الجمال، وعن الذوق الفني. والفصل الثاني فيبحث في الصلة بين علم الجمال والفن، وفي الفرق بين الجمال الطبيعي والجمال الفني، علم الجمال: هل هو فلسفة أم علم؟ أما الفصل الثالث فأفرده لدراسة وظيفة الفن وطبيعته وقدم في هذا الفصل مختلف النظريات التي جاءت متحدثة عن وظيفة الفن وطبيعته. في حين أفرد الفصل الرابع والأخير لتناول دور الذات في الإبداع الفني، والنظريات المفسرة للإبداع الفني، والعلاقة بين الخيال والإبداع الفني.
